“Promoting Climate Change plicies in Turkey" Project is recognized as the only LIFE funded project in Turkey in 2005.

Regional Environmental Center Country Office Turkey (REC Turkey) is the beneficiary of the project that will be implemented between 2006-2008. Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry General Directorate of Environmental Management and the greek consulting company Exergia act as project partners. Italian Ministry of Environment and Territory provide co-funding for the project.

Concept

Project is recognized as the first international project in Turkey that has evolved as a voluntary partnership that is specifically focusing on climate change. The Project can be a means to facilitate further Mediterranean co-operation both in the EU and at the UNFCCC level, especially focusing on renewable energy, adaptation and sustainable solutions for emissions reduction.

The concept of the Project and relevant activities have close interactions with respect to the the below national and international activities

- Entry into force of Kyoto Protocol on 16 February 2005,

- Commencing of the preparation of the Initial National Communication of Turkey to the UNFCCC by GEF funding in August 2005,

- Designation of REC Turkey by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry as the National Focal Point on UNFCCC Article 6 – Education, Training and Public Awareness in May 2005,

- Commencing of negotiations for EU Accession of Turkey as of 3 October 2005,

Top

Objective

To reduce GHG emissions in Turkey through the development of Climate Change policies focused on priority economic sectors. Further project objectives are;
- to support Turkey in fulfilling its obligations under the UNFCCC, and

- also to demonstrate that a participatory process with the involvement of stakeholders can produce effective Climate Change policies and ensure societal consensus.

- to build capacity related to Climate Change within national administration,

- promote intra-governmental cooperation,

- increase the awareness of societal actors and improve their role in Climate Change debate,

- support the development of Climate Change policies for priority sectors,

- enhance public participation and access to environmental information.
